Red String

These paintings are all part of my series named "Red String", which I've been working on and off for about two semesters. This series is dedicated to all my friends, the ones I have left behind because of moving, even if they aren't here.

Red String is based on the (I believe Japanese) folktale that says that you are tied to the one you will marry and love by the Red String of Fate (or some such). Basically, when I read this story, I thought about how really, you were tied to everybody you cared about in the world, and how, especially for me, there were a lot of people I had left behind because of my constant moving. I believe that I AM tied to these people by similar strings, that connect me to them. They still affect me. I still love them. Despite space and time, they are people that have influenced and greatly mattered to me.

I try to use red constantly throughout the series to tie back into the red string (which you can even see in the middle piece), and to add more of a feeling of distance, played with a funky sphere perspective: it's almost like you are looking at them from a fortune teller's globe or a telescope or something.

The art piece on the left has , while the guy on the right of the middle piece is . I wasn't able to do all the people I wanted, but I hope that everybody understands.
